Thoora: A New Way to Discover and Share Content

Creating content is a tedious job. While it is so fulfilling when you have the finished product in front of you, it is such a drag when you are working to get it done. In the same vein, discovering best content online has become equally tiresome, thanks to the tens of thousands (probably hundreds of thousands) of new, user generated content showing up online these days.

Many startups are hard at work to find a solution to discover quality content. Thoora too is built with that in mind. The developers claim that the app offers a new way for you to discover, monitor, and share the best of the web: by creating living bodies of knowledge on the topics you choose. That’s an interesting statement, but I would like to test their claim firsthand. Join me after the jump.

Thoora’s patented engine helps you discover, rate and deliver the highest quality, most trusted and relevant content on any given topic. However, Thoora isn’t like any other typical content discovery app we have come across so far, it has got a twist. While they use their algorithm to discover content, it gives the user the tools to refine, re-order and prioritize the discovered items. The result is human perfected, living bodies of knowledge that are always fresh and relevant.

User Interface

Dashboard

Dashboard

Thoora has a gorgeous homepage that charms people to sign up for a free account. The dashboard I landed on after sign up and verification was empty, but was there was beauty in that emptiness (Zen!). Their color scheme is a bit darker than what we have been used to, but doesn’t hurt the eyes at all.

Ease of Use

Creating a New Topic

Creating a New Topic

You can get started easily by creating a new topic. After naming the topic, add some keywords that are relevant to the topic in question. The app then suggests a bunch of keywords on its own that might be relevant, but in my case I found them to be of little to no use at all. You can give weightage to individual keywords or choose to treat them all equally. All topics can either set to be viewed by the public or restricted only to personal use.

Putting the Algorithm to Work

After you create a topic, Thoora beings to explore the entire blogosphere, Twittosphere, other social media apps and thousands of traditional media sources. It takes Thoora just a few seconds to discover content and then it uses over 100 signals to filter, rank and deliver that content to you for further refinement.

All Findings of Thoora

All Findings of Thoora

At first my chosen keywords – apps and web apps – didn’t bring in any results in the News section but had a few in the Videos section. So, I tweaked the topics to include keywords like movies and Hollywood to check if the app is able to find any relevant content now. And this time, Thoora did find content for all sections.

Surprisingly, the videos section was full of app review videos and there was no single video for the keywords movie or Hollywood. Similarly, the videos section lacked the menu that lets you choose why you are deleting a particular link. All discoveries have a brief description to go with them and clicking on the links will take you to the source of the content.

Refining the Results

Favorites Section

Favorites Section

As expected, some of the items listed were not what I was looking for and some were the perfect discoveries that fit like a glove to the keywords supplied. Use the heart or the trash icon to like or dislike a discovery. Based on your input, the app will start the refining process and will further further optimize the results.

Exploring Topics

Popular Topics

Popular Topics

Thoora happens to be a place to discover content shared publicly by other users like you as well. Choose any topic that grabs your attention from the Popular and Featured sections. If you find the content to be in line with your taste, start following the topic from your dashboard.

Final Thoughts

Thoora’s secret of success lies in the unique combination of the human element and algorithm. And having a gorgeous interface adds to the magic too. The bookmarklet makes for an interesting addition. When used, it acts a lot like the standard bookmarking app plugin and saves the link to a topic of your choice.

While they have a native Android tablet app, apps for iPad and smartphones are on the way. The success of a content discovery app these days depend a lot on having native mobile apps and I hope they launch them sooner than later. If you are hungry for content, go sign up and start training the algorithm to your taste.
