DailyBooth: Your Life in Pictures

Social networks have made sharing so much fun. Sharing images in particular has never been so easy. Just upload your images and they’re up for all your friends and family to see. The icing on the cake is that most of these services are free. Photo sharing is an integral part of all social networks and given the public craze towards sharing images, dedicated social networks have popped up focusing only on sharing pictures.

DailyBooth is a popular social network centered around pictures. Interested in learning how interesting it turned out to be?

Overview

DailyBooth is one big conversation about your life, through pictures. You can start using the service even without signing up. But, if you sign up, there is a good chance you will find some great friends real fast.

Sign Up Page

Sign Up Page

DailyBooth is a free service and signing up makes the experience a lot better. The sign up is simple but requires you to submit your birthday. I usually get apprehensive when an app asks anything more than the standard email, login and password information. Let’s see over the course of the review if this piece of personal information actually helps to enhance the service in any way.

Getting Started

Snapping a Picture using Webcam

Snapping a Picture using Webcam

DailyBooth promotes a feature that allows the user to start using the service by taking a picture and start using the service rightaway. This requires a webcam in your computer and you will have to allow DailyBooth to access it. A novel feature to attract new users but since a lot of desktop users won’t have a webcam, how about an option to upload an image for checking out the same features without signing up?

Finding Friends

Finding Friends

After signing in for the first time, you will be shown a page that helps you find friends using your existing Twitter, Facebook or Google accounts. The page is nicely designed and you have the option to skip this step if not interested. Connecting with your friends will let you share pictures with them, allow your friends to find you and to get more followers at DailyBooth. All imports happen securely without having to give out your login credentials to the folks at DailyBooth.

Suggested Users

Suggested Users

I’m not sure who took a leaf out of whose book, but after finding your friends, DailyBooth suggests (in Twitter style) a list of users worthy enough to be followed. Unlike Twitter though, none of them were celebrities or verified accounts and since I haven’t specified my hobbies and interests either, I’m really skeptical about the relevance of the suggestions. I chose a few from the list to see how this feature actually plays out.

Dashboard

Dashboard

Dashboard

Again, I’m not sure who lifted the idea from whom, but the dashboard of DailyBooth looks a lot similar to Twitter on the web. The tabs at the top even have some of the same titles as you’ll see in Twitter. The followers list on the left pane looks like… you guessed it right, Twitter!

The streams, mentions etc. are unbelievably similar, but even if they have drew their inspiration from Twitter, it is totally fine by me, as Twitter does the same by lifting features & UI from its own ecosystem all the time. The thing that matters here is that the app is suddenly more familiar and easier to use.

Streams

Booths

Booths

The tabs in the dashboard all hold their respective streams. For example, the Booths tab is home to the stream of images that people you follow post. All images are accompanied by messages and even hashtags. You can view all the comments that have been associated to a picture and contribute your own words too!

Everything Stream

Everything Stream

Your images and comments will show up in the username tab. Except for the @username tab, the rest of tabs all carry the social interactions. If you want to know what happened when in a chronological order, try the tab named Everything. You will find the unfiltered updates including the following and followed notifications.

One thing I was so excited to see was the full length comments. You are not limited to 140 characters to convey your thoughts. While some people have posted comments that are as long as this blog post, it’s a liberating experience these days to have an option to say a few more words.

Public Profile

The Public Profile shows the images you have snapped and the comments you have posted in the Booths tab. I found the activity tab to contain everything from the Booths tab plus your follow notifications. An option to send personal messages to anyone on DailyBooth is available but you will have to activate your account to gain access to it.

Live Feed

Well, this feature is self explanatory. If you’re bored and looking to kill some time, turn on the live feed and check out the images posted in real-time. The sheer number of images appearing every minute clearly indicates how popular DailyBooth actually is. Use the Pause button if you find the feed too overwhelming.

The first thing I looked for in DailyBooth was an iPhone app. Given the fact that they are all about sharing pictures, I found it a bit odd not to have one. Then seeing so many images coming in every minute, I searched for DailyBooth in the iOS appstore and there was an official app. But the big question is why isn’t it mentioned, even once, on their homepage? They are missing out on a landrush by not linking to it in the homepage.

Final Thoughts

Simply put, DailyBooth is a superior version of Twitpic. I liked Instagram, but its unstoppable flow of images put me off. That’s not the case with DailyBooth. In fact the killer feature of DailyBooth is allowing the user to curate the list of people they folow. Curation helps to bring sanity to the images that come in the stream. Found somebody posting offensive images? Just unfollow them to keep your stream clean.

If you’re into the concept of sharing and viewing images of people but not in the crazy Instagram style, DailyBooth is the ideal online destination.
