UI and Usage

The interface design is pretty well done, though designed to be light weight, holding back the eye candy design elements you’ll get with other major browser-based Twitter apps. However, Streamdin isn’t really intended to be a stand alone Twitter client, but rather a full Twitter client in addition to mapped tweets being streamed in. You can close the Twitter client, but not the map.

The overall app usage is pretty slick, though tweets being streamed in at the edges of the map window are cut off. Other than that though, it’s a pleasure to use and is pretty straight forward. Leaving the app running is entertaining as live tweets are litteraly streamed into the map with a fun bounce effect and briefly displayed tweet message. Once the tweet message fades away, the user’s icon remains in its place on the map.

Viewing Users

To view a user, simply click their image and their profile will open in the client window on the left. You’ll be able to see all their profile information, follow/unfollow, view tweets, etc. Hover over tweets in the client as well as in the map to view additional options such as retweeting.

Extra Features

Streamdin has tied in tokbox for live chatting and streaming, directly within the app. You’ll be able to move the streaming window around to continue using Streamedin. When you begin streaming the app will auto-fill your tweet box with a message saying, “I’m video chatting live via @streamdin, join me http://bit.ly/xxxxxx

Conclusion

Overall, Streamd.in is a lot of fun to use to find local tweets, or even tweets not so local. The interface is clean, simple, straight forward and easy to use. The Twitter client is fast, even though Google Maps can feel a bit sluggish at times. The addition of live video and chat streaming adds a more social dimension to it in addition to viewing a live stream of tweets appear on the map.

Sometimes tweets are cut off when appearing on the map, though it’s likely a limitation of Google Apps. If it’s possible though, it would be nice to see it fixed. Built in search of both Twitter or a specific location makes it fast and easy to find tweets. You can also share the Streamdin URL once you’ve found a part of Google Maps you want to share. The specific coordinates are included in the URL (thanks to Google Maps).

Summary

Streamd.in is a simple web based Twitter client paired with Google Maps.
