Instant Screen Sharing and Collaboration with dimdim

I can’t begin to tell you the number of times I’ve needed to be able to easily share my screen or see someone else’s, whether it was for collaboration reasons or simply being the IT guy for family. dimdim gives you the ability to quickly and easily share your screen, collaborate with others and much more.

I’ll take a look at dimdim and how to quickly setup screen sharing for collaboration or other reasons, with a screencast preview.

Overview

dimdim offers a variety of capabilities, but its primary goal is web conferencing and screen sharing, all provided from a modern day browser. You’re able to share your screen, a whiteboard, chat, presentation, video and lots of other neat stuff. It’s really the ultimate web conferencing tool, but is also very helpful for those looking for a quick and easy way to do screen sharing.

Pricing

Although dimdim has a free aspect to it, they really push their Pro plan, which is $25 per month. If you’re just an average joe looking for easy screen sharing though, you’ll have plenty of options just sticking with the free plan.

If you’re curious as to how dimdim stacks up against the competition, they do provide a relatively detailed comparison chart to get a better overall grasp on feature comparison between the major services. I haven’t tried dimdim’s competitors yet but the chart certainly appears to give dimdim a significant advantage.

User Interface and Usage

Using dimdim is very easy and the overall interface design is pretty well done. Sign up only takes a few seconds and you’re not asked for any sort of payment information unless you decide you want to sign up for the Pro plan (or higher).

Schedule Meeting

Once signed in, you can schedule a meeting or start one immediately. Scheduling a meeting is easy and there are quite a few options available, including “dial-in” which allows people to call and listen to the web conference audio. You’ll also have a widget available to embed in your website or elsewhere to display information such as a countdown timer, chat transcript and video recording.

Using the web meeting web app is straight forward and very easy, so you won’t have much (if any) learning to do. If you do need help though, they have plenty of resources and instructional videos in their help area.

Final Thoughts

I’ve used dimdim several times in the past to share my screen with friends or family as well as viewing their screens to help solve problems or collaborate on work. It was certainly invaluable at those times and plenty easy enough to use, not just for myself but those who were less tech. savvy.

The overall interface is pretty well designed, although from a designers perspective the website itself could use some refinements. I don’t particularly like that they push their Pro plan so heavily and essentially drown out the fact that they even offer something Free. I would certainly like to see a cleaner, more defined Free product in terms of marketing and user interface.

Overall, the app has worked well in the past and was just as good during this evaluation. The collaboration web app has seemed to function quite well every time I use it in Safari, Firefox or Chrome.

If you use any apps similar to this, whether desktop or browser-based, please let me know in the comments. Thanks!
