I love Twitter. It’s my favourite social network and, to be honest, the only one I actually check up on a regular basis. I use, and have used, a range of Twitter applications, both native and web-based, to fulfil my social networking craving and we’re going to talk about them today.
Specifically, we’re going to talk about Twitter.com versus TweetDeck, both two official Twitter web apps distributed by the company themselves. Late last year, Twitter introduced “Twitter Fly“, a redesigned service that offered up a new web app, as well as some new features that we’ll take a look at in this article. Conversely, the company also bought out TweetDeck, and then released new versions of their native and web apps last year.
It’s really quite interesting that Twitter has two official web apps, and two official native apps. In this “Battle of the Apps” article, we’ll take a look at them versus one another.
Twitter bought TweetDeck a couple of weeks back for a hefty $50 million (figure is based on reports and has not been confirmed by Twitter or Tweetdeck). This is an interesting development, especially as Twitter is almost completely against third-party clients that replicate the core functionality of what Twitter does in it’s official family of apps.
Both TweetDeck and Twitter have native applications for Macs, with TweetDeck having one for PC too. You can find both apps on your smartphone too, whether it be Android or iOS. However, they both compete for web app love since Twitter has it’s official website, and TweetDeck has it’s Chrome web app. Today, we’re going to compare the two and see whether, from a web app-only perspective, the deal is worth it for the web apps. Remember Adobe AIR? With advancements in HTML5 and even Silverlight, AIR seems to have been left in the back of our minds-at least here at Web.AppStorm. Adobe AIR has some pretty great apps, however, that are still rocking the AIR space and even leading their respective areas (like Twitter).

TweetDeck is a fantastic app, don’t get me wrong. However, HootSuite offers the candy that’s more satisfying to my taste buds. My Twitter apps are what I call “always-on” because they’re one of the few apps I leave running and visible at all times. So, switching apps isn’t something I take lightly.
With that said, here’s ten reasons I’ve decided to switch from TweetDeck to HootSuite.
As the popularity of Twitter has soared over the past two years, so has the number of Twitter clients. It can be slightly intimidating for a new Twitter user to choose the right client as they can have different strengths and weaknesses.
