Questions

As a first-time dad of a two year old, I continually find myself being humbled by how much I have still to learn about being a great father. Every time I think I’ve got something down with my son, he throws a curve ball our way and we go back to the drawing board. I am realizing that this full time job — parenting — is one where I am constantly learning and seeking advice, and I don’t think it is ever going to stop.

My wife and I have found the web to be very helpful for a lot of answers to our questions that we have about our son, when it comes to simple issues like when to potty train, to more complex ones like “Why is our son not eating?” But, as we have found, we can spend hours on the web finding the answers to our questions and we can get many different opinions from people. That is great, but I would love to be able to condense that into one site — where hopefully the answers are all high quality.

As I was looking for answers to a question a few weeks ago, I stumbled upon Quib.ly, which is a question and answer site, similar to Quora and the like, but puts its focus on parenting and technology. Those are two areas where I can offer help and learn a great deal from so I thought I would give it a spin to see how beneficial it could be for me.

As the web continues to get better and better, something that I take for granted a lot of the time is the amount of information that is on it. It continues to amaze me at how I can type in a random question or phrase and usually always find an answer very quickly and easily. Add on top of that the increase in blogging and how easy it is for someone to set one up, you will soon have an internet with an almost infinite wealth of knowledge.

But, what about those times where you want to ask a specific question to people, and you want to gather information and opinions in somewhat real time? Yes, a Google search can help with that, but it doesn’t always get the job done. Enter in a web app called Branch, where you can ask questions in real time and get answers from the millions of people around the world. I have been able to test it out over the past week or so, and I have learned some interesting things about it and how it works.

There’s plenty of information on the internet today, but it can still be difficult to find that one fact you need. Google can’t answer your questions directly, and if you do search for a question, chances are you’ll find some off-the-wall response on Yahoo! Answers. Not exactly what you were looking for.

Instead, today there are a number of niche question and answer sites that can make your search for an answer much more productive. These sites are designed to let users ask and answer questions, and usually let readers vote up answers that are the best. There’s several well known niche Q&A sites that you may already use, but keep reading to see the best places to get your questions answered that we’ve found.

We’re going to be kicking off a new series next week, called “Ask the Editor”. This will run a few times each month, and give you a chance to submit questions to be answered by our editorial team (and a few expert writers, if we need some assistance!)

Whether you have a question related to web apps, browsers, or Web.AppStorm in general, I’d really love to hear it! I’ll do my best to answer a series of diverse questions that will be interesting for everyone.

Everyday we find ourselves at cross roads, unable to decide about things. When in doubt we always turn to friends and family to get our queries answered. Now that the world has become so connected by way of social networking, we have access to experts from across the globe.

There are a few web apps that help us tap into the social expertise network to get our questions answered. Yahoo answers is the most famous and Aardvark is the latest. In addition to connecting us with thousands of volunteer experts, Aardvark (also known as Vark) allows us to connect with our friends by integrating Facebook and Gmail accounts. Let’s see how best we can tap into the social knowledge base.
