These days, there seems to be countless services that can be used to host and share files. The likes of Dropbox, Box and Google Drive are understandably popular, but they all have limitations of one form or another. There’s hosts of smaller, less popular apps, but then you risk whether or not they’ll be around forever.

If you need a more flexible solution, ownCloud could be just what you’re looking for, giving you the chance to easily host and access your files from other computers. You can run it on your own server, or host it on a number of hosting services easily. It just might be the Dropbox alternate you’ve been needing.

Anyone who has to write at any length at their computer will know that it’s all too easy to get distracted. Using many modern word processors is akin to working in a cartoon with endless brightly colors buttons vying for attention, and when you add in the risk of being drawn to browsing the web in the name of “research”, it’s a wonder any words ever get written.

Writer is a distraction-free online word processor that has been designed to make it easier to focus on what you need to get down on the page. It’s like an online version of the popular Mac app WriteRoom, and might be just what you need to help you stay focused when writing online.

Google.

For many people, Google is the internet. It is one of a handful of companies that have become part of everyday language of the young and old. I’ve grown up with Google, and recently realized just how many of the company’s tools I use on a daily basis. I’m not a fanboy, but I’m living in a Google world, and loving it.

It could be argued that Google has gained something of a monopoly, but even still, Google is a company that has earned a place in many people’s hearts. It is generally looked on rather affectionately, rather than with the suspicion that is reserved for Microsoft. That may be changing, but for me – and many others – it’d be hard to imagine life without many of the tools the company has produced.

A big part of development, coding, or web design is repeating yourself. No one likes to admit it, but a lot of the work we do is repetitive. A great way to reduce the number of times you have to write something is to save it to use again later using code snippets. Snippets are little bits of code that you have written before that you think you might find useful again later, they could be a specific way to show images on a site, the SQL to create a handful of tables in one stroke, or an entire class for the backend of an ASP.NET web application. Whichever it is you need a place to keep the snippets so that you can get to them when you need them.

This is where the cloud based snippet storage comes into its own. You can access it from anywhere that you have an internet connection, which is everywhere these days. It saves you messing around with memory sticks with your code in text files on, or sending yourself snippets by email (we’ve all done it!) and allows you to find what you want when you want it. I’ve compiled a list of 17 super slick snippet storage sites below in no particular order, check it out, you might find the perfect one for you.

With the Christmas holiday fast approaching, for those of you that are like me and avoid the mall like it is a disease, you are probably doing a lot of online shopping. If you are also like me, you are just starting your shopping or aren’t done yet. I don’t know why I do this to myself every year, but I procrastinate to get my shopping done and because I stick to mainly online, I either have to spend more money on shipping fees, or suck it up and go to the mall.

Well, I have been playing around with an app that is perfect for those of you that like to online shop. Slice can help with all kinds of things when it comes to your impulse buys to ones you want to make sure you get on time. It’s a great app for those that want to keep better record of what they buy and how much they spend online.

Last month on Web.Appstorm, I looked at PhotoRaster, an advanced online photo editor which really impressed us. Today, we have another web app called Pixlr, which is another twist on online photo editing.

While PhotoRaster, like most image editing apps, is a sole app that gives you tons of options, Pixlr is a photo editor split into three different apps. Each of these is built for a specific purpose, and you’ll likely find yourself only using one of the 3 Pixlr apps. In this article I’m going to cover each one so you can see which one is for you!

Photo editors are something which we all need from time to time. Whether you’re a professional photographer or a casual blogger, editing tools are necessary for most of our jobs. However, choosing the right one for you is a difficult task, and the majority of us don’t have spare money to invest in some of the high end software. This means it’s pretty slim pickings if you want a capable program will a relatively low price tag.

Recently, I’ve came across Photo Raster, a web app that fit the bill perfectly, something I never expected to happen. Read on to find out how Photo Raster fits into my workflow.

Online apps are nothing new, but the range of different web based applications that are available and the level of complexity they offer means that the current crop of tools can be virtual indistinguishable from their desktop counterparts.

Using an online image editor does not mean having to make compromises – you can even use a web-based version of Photoshop. There are plenty of editors to choose from, just as in the offline arena, and enThread is just one that is vying for your attention. Let’s see if it’s the one you should be using.

A little while back, I wrote a review of HelloFax and I came away definitely excited about where the technology of faxing documents was going. Like I had mentioned in that post, it still baffles me that the fax machine is still around and that people are still using it. What baffles me even more is the procedure that we need to go through to sign a document and send it back if we didn’t have a fax.

As someone who spends the majority of his day online, sending documents back and forth, this process can really be a pain. You have to print the document, then you have to sign it, scan it back in, and then upload it and send it back. There’s got to be an easier way to digitally send documents, if HelloFax could make it so simple.

Fast forward a few weeks and the last couple of days, I have been playing around with an app called BoxySign. The instant I saw the intro video, I thought to myself “This is it, someone finally has figured out how to do make the process of signing documents totally digital.” After that, I just had to try out it out and see if it was worth it.
