There once was a time when I followed gaming with verve and passion, soaking up every out-of-ten score in the Official Playstation Magazine, and cursing Nintendo for somehow making the latest Mario Kart game even more irritating than the last. But time has passed, and I no longer have my finger quite on the pulse.

However, I still do hear about most of the latest releases, one way or another, and I pay special attention to game launches with something interesting, unusual, or notable about them. A recent example was the launch of Zoo Tycoon, of which I learned thanks to my AppStorm colleague, Marius Masalar, and his fine taste in tweeting.

Spending — or should I say, wasting — time on the internet can be a very simple thing to do. Most of us get to a point when we just want to relax and take our mind off work for a few minutes. When that moment arrives, there are a limited number of things one can do. For me, the moment I am in a similar situation, I would just open my browser and start playing online HTML5/Flash-based games. This is a pleasant way to just take your mind off work and release stress without getting yourself involved in the game for hours and weeks.

So here’s my favorite online games right now, with enough stuff to keep everyone happy — and no annoying Facebook logins required.

Having an infrastructure in place to connect multiple systems together for collaborative or co-operative play has made millions of hours of entertainment possible and verified the art as a viable social pastime. However, the Internet has brought with it some of the biggest controversies of the modern technology era.

Over even just the past few months, the industry has been alive with controversy over DRM, stability and other Internet-related worries and the announcement of Microsoft’s Xbox One last week has sparked the latest batch of discussion. Today we’re going to take a look at some of these controversies and how they might be affecting our gameplay. (more…)

At the risk of dating myself, I must confess I grew up playing Atari 2600 — Asteroids, Centipede, Space Invaders, Breakout — I had them all. Sadly, when Nintendo debuted I packed up my trusty Atari console, along with all of its games, and marched them down the street where they were greeted by a younger boy in the neighborhood.

I sorely wish I had saved both the console and the cartridges, but what is past can not be undone. Time and game consoles continue to move forward… well, sort of.

You see, those old gaming classics never really died. They just sort of went into hiding for a few decades, only to re-emerge in all of their 1980′s glory, ready for a new generation of gamers to tackle the process of getting Pitfall Harry past his obstacles.

Over the years a number of ways to play the old classics have emerged, but Atari themselves has recognized the value in nostalgia and done something to capitalize on that feeling. (more…)
