Communicating internally, within the team or office, happens primarily through emails, but emails don’t have the flexibility of a real-time conversation involving multiple people. That’s when instant messengers come to the rescue, which have their own share of issues. First and foremost is privacy and security — you cannot be talking about sensitive business information over MSN or GTalk.

Second is distraction from buddies in your IM list and that’s the reason most IM clients are banned behind the office firewall. A private corporate messaging client for communication and collaboration can solve the problem. HipChat is a great example of one such app.

In this Quick Look, we’re highlighting Jaconda. The developer describes Jaconda as an app for Project Team Chat. It allows you to create chat-rooms for projects and integrate them with your favorite tools. Teammates can chat from their browser or fill-in their Google Talk and add team chat to the Instant Messenger they love. Jaconda integrates with services like Github, Google Code, Pivotal Tracker and others. This helps to be on top of things and to see in real time what’s going on.

There is no denying that Facebook is making social connections and interactions incredibly easy. After reinventing the concept of social networking, Facebook has now become a platform and a global phenomenon paving way for millions of people across the globe to come together. Now that access to the internet is ubiquitous and bandwidth is cheap, video conferencing and chat usage is exponentially on the rise.

The problem with popular standalone video chat and conferencing apps is that you’ll have to have a separate account and you’ll have to invite your friends to come on board in order to engage in a meaningful conversation. It may be for work, business or education; it is now very common for people to stay away from their home for extended periods of time. If you are one such person, where will you meet and mingle with your friends or family? On an instant messenger platform like Yahoo or web conferencing services like Webex? If your answer is the former, you need to come to terms with web 2.0 and if the answer is latter, you have way too much money in your hands.

Multiplicity. A huge problem when it comes to communication. We all have friends who use either multiple IM accounts or multiple IM services. This problem was tackled by desktop apps that can handle multiple protocols and accounts. But then again, we use multiple computers and mobile devices for work and personal use. Installing these desktop IM apps on a work computer may not be possible thanks to the IT team.
