42 Web Apps to Move Your Business Into the Cloud

Enterprises and Businesses are the cash cows that can make a software development company into an overnight success. Selling to them is an incredibly lucrative opportunity. There’s a catch though; you will have to work hard to convince them to make a switch from an archaic system they might be using in production.

Cloud computing and SaaS models unlock the potential of resources — both human and hardware. While some cloud solutions might end up costing a lot more than their self hosted competitors over time, a shrewd manager will know the savings are manifold too. Data portability and remote teams are among the first in the list.

With so many web apps to choose from in all aspects of running a business, moving all business functions to the cloud is a very real possibility.

You might notice that some popular and prominent web apps haven’t been included in this list. We did this to avoid repeating apps from our prior roundups. Our 101 Apps for Your Web App Startup Toolbox would be a great companion to this list. Don’t forget to check it out!

Wait … no 37signals apps? I personally really like Backpack and Highrise, and for now, their free accounts are working good for my personal freelancing uses. Plus, Campfire is the best group chat I’ve ever used, hands down.

    • http://gztwincities.com/ Nathan Corbier

      Matthew,

I noticed a lack of 37signals apps as well. I use several of the apps here, usually through GApps Integration, but at the heart of my business are Highrise and Basecamp due to their Freshbooks integration.

Campfire is awesome, unless you have your own server that can support XMPP/Jabber, in which case you can take that in house. Or, alternately, you can use your Google Apps account (If you’re drank that kool-aid) as your XMPP provider.

  • David

For accounts there is also kashflow, particularly if you are in the UK although it may support other currencies/countries (www.kashflow.com)
ContactMe is a good CRM solution that also integrates a nice contact form that you can use on your website – anyone who uses it to conatc you gets stored in the crm so you can track e-mails, notes, tasks etc, related to them. (www.contactme.com)

  • http://www.cleardrop.nl JH

Great list with a lot of useful looking tools I didn’t hear of before. We use Google Apps, Openbravo ERP and ZOHO suite of applications to run our business.

  • http://agilewords.com Tabitha

    Hi Justin,
You’ve curated one of the most useful tools that every office person needs. I’ve used quite a few of them personally, like Skype and Webex. But i’d like to introduce you to another tool that would be ideal and relevant for many who are working remotely with a team or someone who always have to travel. It’s called Agilewords, and you can find it here: http://agilewords.com

It’s a document collaboration tool that will save the hassle of version issues, email attachments, to name a few. So feel free to test it yourself. I’m sure you’ll like it!

this looks like a good list, our company uses 7shifts.com for scheduling. it works pretty well. we had tried a few of these before.

  • Dave

I agree with Matt, very strange no 37signals apps.
My business partner and I built a $600k business on their suite and google apps.

I wonder if because they are so pro-Mac that the PC world wants to help it’s weaker web app competitors…

    Hi,

    great list.
But i was missing one app. What about tine2.0?

    http://www.tine20.org

Tine is great for E-Mail / Address-Book / Tasks and Timetracking. I use it for 2 month now, and it’s great. Synchronization with activesync is also available. And the best it’s opensource.

It’s a very popular alternative to SalesForce, it’s mature, and extensible. My organization lives off of it, especially the Sales & Marketing teams.

We’ve been using When I Work for our employee scheduling for about 12-months and are extremely impressed. We had previously used another software and there is no comparison. It is incredibly easy and fast to make the schedule. Staff loves using all the mobile and text features. The web site makes it sound too good to be true but it is actually better than I could imagine. Good to see When I Work on the list.
