SUBERNOVA has a very simple price plan making life easy for new users without having to spend a lot of time weighing a variety of plans. You can either pay monthly or on an annual basis. If you choose to go with the monthly plan, SUBERNOVA will cost you $14.99 per month. Signing up for an annual payment of $149.99 brings you a discount of $30 when compared to the monthly payment plan. All new users get a full 30 day free trial after signing up.

A single price plan without a limit on the number of collaborators is a welcome idea for small and medium business who don’t have to fork out outrageous licence fees for each and every user.

The user interface is dark and dashing. There is no option to change the dark theme and there is no sample data to start with. SUBERNOVA informs the user to update the Settings page to start with. So, I’ll go ahead to do just that.

You can update vital details like the default currency, hourly rate, Paypal account info. and other invoicing details from here. SUBERNOVA supports a wide range of currencies and their symbols much to the delight of users from across the globe.

If you do not like to login from the SUBERNOVA login page, you can use your own domain for that purpose. There is an extensive guide to add the custom domain from the Settings page.

Adding a new user to your team is as simple as adding their name an email address. You also have the option of hiding the hourly price from the prying eyes of the users you invite.

Okay, I was both impressed and annoyed with the new project creation window. I was annoyed that I could not get past the Client selection drop down and was impressed with the option to type in “today”, “next week, “next month” in the date ranges. You cannot move ahead without creating a client when creating a project for the first time and SUBERNOVA does not allow you to create a new customer from this page. A lot of competing apps offer this feature and SUBERNOVA might want to rethink their strategy here.

The projects created are listed neatly with their own timeline trackers and timers. Status of collaboration is also marked individually on every project.

Milestones

What good comes out of the concept of project management without milestones? SUBERNOVA has a nicely thought out milestones page. Add a task that you consider to be a milestone, assign it to a project, select a deadline and assign it to anyone in your team. That’s it. All the milestones are automatically linked to their respective projects.

Quotes and Invoices

The killer feature of SUBERNOVA is the ability to create quotes and invoices right from the projects page. Typically, in most apps, we might have to go to the quote or invoice page to create one. Even though the created quotes are linked to the project, it’s extremely enticing to do that right from where you are. Go SUBERNOVA.

Paypal account integration allows your clients to pay directly from the invoice sent. SUBERNOVA can also send polite payment reminders to those lazy clients who forget to pay up.

SUBERNOVA is a no nonsense app designed for those people who want to put their best efforts into the business and not into piles of paperwork. Making the app available on as many platforms as possible is a very smart idea both from marketing standpoint and ease of use.

They also have a great refund policy – no questions asked 30 day refund post upgrade. Except for the dark theme and the Adobe AIR app, which for some reason failed to download, I did not find any shortcomings throughout my review. SUBERNOVA certainly deserves a 9/10 for being simple yet awesome.

  • After reviewing ALL of the online project management tools – we decided to use Subernova. There are so many online PM tools and we havent found one that really ticks ALL of the boxes. Subernova was close.
    It’s a great app. Works really well and easy to collaborate with others. Some quirks we have found;
    – When creating a new project, selecting the date sometimes hangs or loops. Annoying.
    – The invoices you create cannot be viewed as a whole. You cannot see an archive of the invoices/quotes you have previously sent (like Freshbooks). You are only able to see individual invoices on individual jobs. No doubt this feature may appear later.
    Other than that, I recommend it.

  • I have been using Subernova now for several months and for what I need it for, it is fantastic and has saved huge amounts of time when it comes to quoting and invoicing.

    I would agree with the above poster about the invoicing could be slightly better in regards to looking back at invoices / archived.

    It is too easy to delete or modify an invoice without being able to see an archive of the original invoice that was sent out.

    To be honest, at the end of the day I am a freelancer and this does everything that I need it for

    I’ve been thinking about http://www.projecturf.com for those reasons. No need for invoices here, I use Billings for that 😉

    Subernova however looks very neat too.

  • After hours of searching for a project management app, I decided on Intervals (http://www.myintervals.com) or, if you want lighter project management linked beautifully to CRM, Solve360 at http://www.norada.com

  • Project Bubble is another alternative which has a free plan. In the free plan you can set up unlimited projects & invoices, so is ideal for freelancers. They charge for collaboration, file uploads and custom branding – but only $19 pm.

    • hey Stu you may want to disclose you are part of that company when posting as I can see from the tour pages your face just like it is here – not saying the service isn’t good etc but really disclosure in these cases is best and doesn’t look like your trying to hide anything. Seriously looking at Project Bubble right now however :)
