Surely you’ve seen some of the cool avatars created using FaceYourManga‘s app — after all, there are over 10 million of them all over the web! Quality graphics, countless variations and subtle details help make each of them unique. You can even recreate your favorite celebrity’s mug with a little patience!

Today we’re going to take a look at how FaceYourManga works, and try to create some fun avatars ourselves. All it takes is a little pointing and clicking, and a little imagination. You can use these avatars for your social network display pictures, or even print them for decorating your home or office. Let’s get cracking, shall we?

FaceYourManga is a simple app that lets you create avatars by adding and modifying graphic facial features, clothing and accessories. It’s free to use and you can create as many avatars as you like, and only costs you $1.10 to export high-res versions for printing.

Getting started

Once you’ve signed up for FaceYourManga, you can get to work on your first avatar by selecting a gender for your character. It’s common to try recreating your own image with the app, but feel free to try making an avatar based on celebrities, fictional characters or even your friends!

Once you’ve decided what to base your next masterpiece on, you can begin playing around with FaceYourManga. There are seven categories of features to add to your avatar, including facial features, hairstyles and outfits. You can even customize the background and logos displayed on your avatar’s clothing. Plus, you can apply make-up on him/her too!

Face first

When creating an avatar, the app starts you off with facial features — edit everything including facial shape, ears, eyes, eyebrows, nose, mouth, lines (such as dimples and wrinkles), details (like birthmarks and freckles), and other signs (scars, a third eye, stitches, that sort of thing), sideburns, mustache, and beard. There are several styles for each facial feature, so you can really go crazy putting your avatar together.

You can then add some hair – choose from a variety of short or long hairstyles. It’s a good idea to work on this along with the facial hair features so you get more realistic results. Finish with a bit of make-up for your avatar’s eyes, face and mouth, such as mascara, blush and lipstick.

Next, hook up your avatar with some cool threads. Choose from basic tops like t-shirts, dresses and bikinis (for women), or go bare-chested (men only), or even pick a Classic top like a shirt or blouse. Class up your ensemble with a jackets and bring it all together with some neat accessories like ties, scarves and hats.

Add accessories like sunglasses

If you’re feeling really creative, you can color your avatar’s personality further with eyeglasses, necklaces, earrings, piercings, tattoos, hand gestures, sports goods like basketballs and footballs, and even masks!

Most of these features can be modified using the toolbar below the main editing area — change colors, move items up/down, adjust the distance between them (for items like eyebrows), zoom to enlarge or reduce items’ size, alter eyebrow expressions and also the amount of make-up.

Finishing touches

Once you’re happy with how your avatar looks, wrap things up by adding a Logo (or text) to his/her t-shirt and choose a background that complements the avatar’s clothing or personality. You can choose from a variety of backgrounds including flat colors, patterns, or even illustrated themes like the pyramids in Egypt or a cityscape.

I’m done, now what?

Once you’re done creating your avatar, you can save it to your profile, share it on Facebook, Twitter or via email, duplicate it to build upon your original creation, add it to a Stack, download a 180x180px PNG version of it to use wherever you like or even buy a large print-ready file that you can get printed by yourself to frame or use in an art project.

If you’re looking to kill some time, just go ahead and hit the Random button to generate an avatar and then play around to create some interesting characters! Or search for your favorite actors, musicians or fictional heroes — I found a few striking likenesses to Nirvana/Foo Fighters member Dave Grohl!

Stacks are essentially collections of avatars, and if you’re making a bunch of similar ones you can group them all together for easy retrieval and sharing, like my gang of Gamer Buddies. You can also browse the community of FaceYourManga users, check out the avatars they’ve created, like them, comment on them or add to your Favs.

FaceYourManga is a really fun app for creating avatars, and has enough facial features and accessories to keep you busy for a long time. It’s also a nice way to keep the kids busy or just keep yourself occupied if you need to. It’d be great if one could place an order for a quality print of an avatar from right within the app and also be allowed to import backgrounds to use. Other than that, it’s a top-notch avatar creation tool and I highly recommend it if you’re stuck thinking about your next Twitter display picture.
