Instant Customer Feedback with KISSinsights

As we all know, your website’s visitors are its most valuable commodity. As such, it’s incredibly important to constantly get feedback from them so you can improve your site and give your visitors more of what they want. There are many ways to accomplish this but my favorite methods are the ones that are simple, quick, easy and don’t require that visitors go out of their way, more than necessary, to give you the information you need.

KISSinsights handles visitor feedback and surveys with beauty and grace so you can get the important information you need. In this quick review we’ll take a look at KISSinsights and what it can do for you.

Overview

KISSinsights, though still currently in beta, certainly has the aesthetic aspect of surveys right. The form is simple and will easily match most any site design. There are two versions, light and dark. Below is the light version used in my temporary portfolio page.

Light Design

Light Design

Strangely, the “Hide” text shown wasn’t supposed to be and isn’t on other demos of the survey’s at KISSinsight’s website. Adding a quick bit of CSS to hide the text took only a second, though that shouldn’t be necessary. The good news is that it appears as if you can customize the form itself, though I didn’t try to do more than hide the “Hide” text. And here’s what it looks like with the text hidden (though a small pixel remains, which could also be hidden).

When the form is hidden, you’ll only see the very top of the form with the tab displaying a “+”. After answering the survey, you’ll get a great looking “Thank you” response. Then the survey will disappear after a few seconds.

Sign Up & Setup

Sign up only takes a few seconds, only requiring your email address and desired password. You’ll then be prompted to enter the URL of the site you want the survey to appear, even though you’ll have to add a small bit of code to the site for it to actually display.

In the next step you’ll be given a small block of JavaScript that you’ll add to your site. You’ll only do this once and manage the survey from within the your KISSinsights’ account.

Once the survey code has been installed, you can begin receiving and viewing your visitor responses, further configure the survey and see other stats. From your account dashboard you’ll be able to see an overview of all your surveys, response count and other basic information and navigation links.

Pricing

The Free plan only allows one survey, and you’re not able to edit the actual survey questions. You’ll have to upgrade to their Pro plan, which costs $39 per month.

Pricing

Pricing

The Pro plan gives you unlimited surveys, 1000 responses per month, fully customizable surveys (questions), a custom thank you message and removes KISSinsights’ branding. I’ll get into the pricing issues in the final thoughts below.

User Interface and Usage

Overall, I love the user interface and using the app is very straight forward and easy. Some of the design elements remind me of Tumblr’s elements, but I think that’s a good thing. They’re clean, stylish and simple. Using the survey form is just as easy and a much less obtrusive method of extracting information from your site visitors than other methods.

Final Thoughts

KISSinsights‘ overall design, usage and functionality is great. It’s still in beta, so it’s safe to expect changes before a full launch. The visitor survey approach is, in my opinion, favorable to other methods.

Now, about pricing. The current pricing setup simply isn’t the most effective. These days website owners pay for hosting, quality analytics, quality contact forms, polls, website monitoring and a whole slew of other services. If they’re going to attract the “small guys”, they’re going to have to loosen up on the Free plan and/or introduce one or more plans priced much lower than $39/m.

We’ll have to see how the app develops as it transitions into a full release. For now though, I would rate KISSinsights 7/10.

  • I’m one of the developers working on KISSinsights and I just wanted to say thanks for the great review! I really appreciate the review and your feedback.

Regarding the “Hide” text: Since the survey is embedded on your site, your site’s styles can actually affect the survey styles. We’ve been working hard to make sure that the possibility of this happening is very low, however, we can’t anticipate all style conflicts, but we will fix them as quickly as we can find them :)

Regarding pricing: We’re currently in the process of determining the best price point for our customers–$39/month is by no means set in stone. If you (or any of your readers) have any feedback on what you’d be willing to pay for KISSinsights, we’d love to hear it!

    Thanks again!

  • Will be checking this one out soon, it seems kinda pricey thou.

  • We recently worked with Hiten over @KISS and he helped us build a “hack” for KISS Insights which allows you to run multiple surveys on the same page. This is especially useful for testing pricing (as in their case, they could have run surveys for $9, $19, $29, $39, etc. to see which people would be willing to pay for).

Here is the code you need: http://www.pearanalytics.com/blog/2010/kiss-insights-hack-how-to-run-multiple-surveys-on-the-same-page/

  • Currently I am using the free KISSinsights on one of my sites. The free version has accomplished what I need it too. Both price points at 29/mo (with branding) and 49/mo (without branding) are preventative to my further use of the program. If and when my sites start to generate more revenue I would give KISSinsights another thought.

  • This seems like a great survey app. It’s nice to finally find one that has a minimal and clean design. I’m working on a couple of new sites and will have to give it a try.
