Twitter is now bigger than MySpace

Remember when MySpace was number one? Then Facebook passed it by, and the world began more or less forgetting about the service. Today while using Google Trends to look at some different URLs I thought I’d see how far MySpace has fallen. It turns out that Twitter has now also passed it by. In fact looking around the web you can almost see a changing of the guard happening with sites that were massively popular a few years ago losing ground to younger upstarts like Twitter, Tumblr and Twitpic. Here are a few interesting trends snapshots:

Myspace vs Twitter

Twitpic vs Flickr

Tumblr vs Typepad

Tumblr vs Blogger

  • Nice article. It’s interesting to see how a domain driven business (as opposed to WordPress and Posterous) are so easily trended. Even with a significant margin for error these trends are telling.

Another way of gauging whether a business/brand/tool is in the “zietgeist” is looking at the search trends of those brands. Search is often an indicator of brand reach and a ‘navigational’ step in logging in – lazy interwebs users using Google to find the login page etc.

As well as the demise of Myspace, we can witness the demise of Bebo: http://www.google.com/insights/search/#q=bebo%2Ctwitter%2Cmyspace&cmpt=q&

The end result was the recent “death” of Bebo: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/social-media/7562278/AOL-prepares-to-shut-down-Bebo.html. How long til Myspace decides to hang up it’s gloves and join the likes of Friendster, Bebo, Geocities and the rest. Time will tell.

  • only a matter of time.

  • Typepad comparison is incorrect. It is a professional blogging platform and most people use domain mapping, thus, the typepad.com domain gets less traffic.

  • I would love to see how WordPress (.com) is comparing to its microblogging counterparts. Back to MySpace, apparently the company that owns it is planning on a relaunch later this year. I wonder if they will ever get back some of the traffic they have lost to FaceBook..? Personally I doubt it :P

  • Can anyone get stats from the Russian “facebook” vkontakte.ru they reckon they have 83 million subscribers? And of course we have the Chinese market.. renren.com comes to mind.. which is popular and has mobile version, since the market is mobile driven. They also have a few fb type clones Xiaonei.com and Yiqi.com Huge following.. but again.. would be nice to see some stats.

  • Funny how you can see the drop around Christmas time, but then suddenly in April as well. . . I’m guessing Earth day was the cause now that I think about. XD

  • You should take a look at Posterous vs Typepad, it looks like Posterous took the lead in just the past few days.

  • Of course it is. I absolutely hate MySpace!

  • facebook steal myspace traffic

  • myspace would have to be *rewritten from scratch to be even considered a decent comeback. What made fb grow so fast was the quality of the code approach put into it

  • This is not true.

Google Trends is not a good measure of how much traffic a site gets. Google Trends displays which sites are more “trending” based on how many searches are done for that specific site on Google search.

If you checkout other stats such as Compete and Alexa, Twitter is still way behind MySpace.
