Is Tumblr’s Growth off the Back of Porn?

Recent tech press coverage of Tumblr has been to tell us just how fast Tumblr has been growing. In fact TechCrunch reported a couple of weeks ago that Tumblr pumps out 1.5 billion pageviews a month!

Here at Web.AppStorm we get a fair bit of search traffic for terms relating to “Tumblr themes”. Last month, Tumblr related terms accounted for almost 9,000 visits to this blog. So I got to thinking that maybe we should look at what other types of Tumblr related content people might like.

Search Terms that include ‘Tumblr’

To do this I use the free search keyword tool from search guru SEOBook.com which takes a term and throws back an ordered list of terms containing your original term. I popped in “Tumblr” and was somewhat startled to realize that the vast majority of search terms for the microblogging platform were porn related! Here’s the snapshot:

I don’t actually think Tumblr’s success is due to porn (excuse the provocative post title), but it was interesting to note that amateur porn bloggers clearly love Tumblr’s ease of use as much as the rest of us.

At some point Tumblr may choose to kick the adult content off of course. It wasn’t so long ago that DIY social network site Ning did the same thing, and though there was a bit of outcry (presumably from all those porn fan communities), Ning appeared to weather the change with no discernible effect.

As for my plans to see what other posts relating to Tumblr we should publish, as you can see I decided to go for the “Tumblr Porn” keyword combo, no doubt it will yield thousands of disappointed searchers.
